How Does an Impeller Pump Work?

Impeller pumps are positive-displacement pumps. The rotor with flexible vanes is mounted centered in a circular housing which has a compressed area at one side. Flexible blades on the periphery of the impeller provide pumping action.

As the impeller spins, the liquid between the blades is pushed out into the discharge port. This happens because of a cam inside the pumping chamber. The flow may be throttled or shut off for a short period on the discharge side without the need for a relief valve.

Discharge, Flow, and Suction

The vanes on the impeller are compressed within the chamber allowing constant discharge through the outlet port of the pump. As the impeller spins, it moves the liquid from the pump's suction side to the discharge side. The impeller keeps spinning while it leaves the cam.This creates a vacuum that pulls the fluid into the pump’s chamber. This fundamental principle applies to both flexible impeller pumps and centrifugal pumps, even though the mechanics differ slightly.
