What is a Gear Pump? 

It is a type of positive displacement pump that moves liquid by trapping it between rotating gears and the pump casing. It provides a steady and consistent flow no matter the pressure. This makes it perfect for situations where precision and reliability matter.

The helical gears are cut at an angle to the gear's face. This design allows for more contact between materials. As a result, it provides a better hydraulic range and quieter operation. How Do Gear Pumps Work?

A gear pump works by rotating two gears that suck in liquid and pump it continuously and evenly. Thanks to their simple construction and high reliability, they are ideal for applications requiring precision and repeatability. 

There are two basic designs, internal or external. Internal gear pumps have a gear inside another gear. Both gears rotate in the same direction. The outer gear drives the inner gear, also called the idler gear. External pumps have two gears of the same size. These gears rotate in opposite directions. They push the liquid to either side before coming back together at the output. 

  1. Gear comes out of mesh, creating expanding volume on the inlet side of the pump. Liquid flows into the cavity and is trapped by the rotating gear teeth.
  2. Liquid travels around the interior of the casing in the pockets between the teeth and the casing – it does not pass between the gears.

  3. Finally, the meshing of the gears forces liquid through the outlet port under pressure.

All About Gear Pumps

They utilize gears, sometimes called rotating cogs, to transfer fluids. The two gears produce a seal and creates suction to the inlet side, fluid is drawn into the pump and then the gears rotate moving the liquid to the outlet port. As the gears rotate they separate on the intake side of the pump, creating a void and suction which is filled by fluid.
